April 2010 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT’S NOTE:
Two days ago the long awaited new DUC propeller was fitted to WTF. I say long awaited because, although most of the bits and pieces arrived quickly following our order, there was a long delay in the final delivery of one vital part. It had to come from France and it seems that quick attention to our needs was not a high priority.

NEWSLETTER — November 2009

A few days ago a member asked me a question relating to fuel. On reflection I think it might be useful to discuss some fuel related matters.

NEWSLETTER — October 2009

We live in a world that is ever changing and it often seems to me that the pace of change is increasing. Perhaps that is just my age. But I’m sure things stayed much the same for ages when I was nineteen. I will mention three changes that are of interest to us as pilots. In the very near future our club aircraft will be able to be used for full PPL training. Secondly, did you know that glass cockpits are becoming more common and in the not too distant future, are likely to become almost the norm? The third change I will mention involves pilot exams. It will soon be possible to do all the subject tests on computer-with a very rapid return of results.

NEWSLETTER — September 2009

An important part of driver training involves the recognition of potential hazards e.g. a car backing from an entrance, a child chasing a ball, etc., as well as being prepared for mistakes by other drivers such as failing to give way. As new drivers gain experience, these skills become almost automatic. In aviation, the parallels are referred to as threat and error management. A threat is anything that puts a flight at risk, e.g. deteriorating weather, a faulty radio, the unexpected appearance of another aircraft, etc. An error is a mistake by you or another pilot which can rapidly become a threat. I have been told that air traffic controllers regard every aircraft that enters their control zone as a potential threat, especially if the pilot is inexperienced.

NEWSLETTER — August 2009

Below are some reminders about the critical importance of pre-flight inspections. Beware of distractions in your inspection routine. These might take the form of phones ringing, somebody talking to you, or something unusual happening nearby. If you are interrupted it may be best to go back to the beginning and start over again.

NEWSLETTER — July 2009

On Saturday the 18th eight members of our club travelled to Dargaville to “show the flag” at their special awards lunch. We would like to have flown over but the weather ruled that right out, so it was travel by road for us. There were many visitors at Dargaville but none attempted to fly in. Attendance totalled ninety-eight, and those of us who attended not only had good food but also some “food for thought”.

NEWSLETTER — April 2009

This month I want to touch on some financial matters in our club. Those of you who have clocked up some time in WTF this month may be unpleasantly surprised when you view your account. There will be a fuel surcharge on it which merits some explanation. Years ago the committee made a decision to try to keep hourly charges as low as possible and also to avoid altering the hourly rate whenever fuel prices changed. In order to achieve this, it was decided to apply a fuel surcharge to compensate for increasing fuel costs.

NEWSLETTER — March 2009

As we enter into Autumn we can expect some weather changes such as some low lying cloud or fog earlier in the day and reduced daylight hours, otherwise conditions for flying are great, so I hope you are making the most of them.
